Most businesses in South Africa do not need a business licence. Licensing applies to specific categories of activity, and the rules are administered by your local municipality rather than nationally, which is why you will get different answers depending on who you ask.
Where a business licence is commonly required
- Food. Preparing, selling or serving food to the public, including home-based catering.
- Health and body treatments. Massage, saunas, certain beauty treatments.
- Entertainment venues such as nightclubs, game arcades and cinemas.
- Hawking and street trading, which usually needs a permit from the municipality.
- Liquor, which is a separate licensing regime entirely.
Beyond these categories, most service businesses, trades, consultancies and online businesses trade without a licence.
